Is Karl Marx partly right about religion?

im not a philosophical person and never even understood my own faith from the core. but i have recently hung out with a friend who believes that Religion poisons everything. it's a book. lol (un)fortunately he has failed to convince me to see things his way. i still maintain that it is not religion that poisons everything, but the people who abuses religion disparity that poisons the world. maybe i am just naive, i believe that people of different backgrounds and faith can still live in peace if we all want to. we dont contradict each other and the world is big enough to accomodate all...
