Kingdom Hearts 2, why does my Gummi ship explode?

I've created from scratch, even added to an existing blueprint, have a pit, weapons, wings, engines, shields - but when I try to fly, I'm surrounded by static electricity, my parts float disconnected in space, my ship explodes, and I get the equivalent of a Game Over. And the walkthrough guide is useless.
